CHRIS CHATFIELD

 

Coming from a background in boxing,  Chris  began his study of fencing in the late 1980s under the tutelage of classical sabre fencing master Jeff Elmes.

 

In 2002 he founded the 1595. Club, with the aim of exploring and studying the martial art of western weaponry, the main focus being the single-handed cut and thrust sword. 

 

He has taught, demonstrated and lectured  across Europe, especially on the work of the 16th century fencing master Vincentio Saviolo.

 

In 2023 he  set up the International Skirmishing Association, an organisation  dedicated to promoting  the art of cutlass fencing, using a ritualised  rule set  to encourage  a defensively responsible  and martially sound practise.

 

He works as a full-time fencing instructor.
